Flipside Circus, Queensland’s largest youth arts organisation is turning 20 and is getting ready to dazzle Brisbane audiences – both children and adult – with two big events in November: The Flipside Circus Cabaret Show and Flipside Circus 20th Anniversary Gala.
The Flipside story began in 1998 when a group of families and circus artists got together to run circus workshops for children in West End’s Orleigh Park. 20 years later Flipside will reach its 1 millionth audience member and continues to grow and evolve.
Flipside is an epicenter for contemporary circus in Brisbane, playing a vital role in the ongoing development of the Australian contemporary circus. The company runs four key programs from their training centre in Alderley; an artistic program of performances, by for, and with young people; training programs including a circus school (with around 360 students enrolled), social circus programs, and support for local and visiting circus artists to train, share skills, and make new shows.
Beyond its success in training the next generation of young circus artists, Flipside Circus is a leading example of the importance of youth circus within the ecology of the contemporary circus sector and this year celebrates the impact that it has made across the local and national arts sectors.
Creative producer Robert Kronk says “Flipside is a place where young people can develop their skills, work hard, take risks, trust, show off, dream, and have fun. It’s a wonderful organisation that balances access and participation, artistic excellence and innovation.”
“Flipside is not just about training the next generation of world beating circus artists it’s also about creating space for children and young people to find their own voice and tell their own stories.”
The full gala line-up includes everything from aerialists, to bears with tutus, acrobats, comedy, and more from Flipside artists, trainers, and special guest artists.
The second performance coming up is the 2018 Cabaret Show. The 2018 Cabaret Show is all about taking your breath away – through dazzling feats of skill and hilarious feats of silliness. Featuring the talents of Flipside’s extraordinary performance troupe; young artists aged 8 to 17 years, the 2018 Cabaret Show sees these young performers taking risks, mastering new circus skills and creating a night of fun.
“Brisbane is home to some of the best circus artists in the world and this is a chance to see our next generation of circus stars show off their extraordinary skills.” Aliya Abisheva – Head Trainer
