Vision: to empower communities through circus

who we are

FLIPSIDE CIRCUS IS QUEENSLAND’S LARGEST YOUTH ARTS ORGANISATION – AN AWARD-WINNING COMPANY WITH A REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING AND PERFORMANCE AS WELL AS FOR SUPPORTING QUEENSLAND’S WORLD-LEADING CIRCUS SECTOR.

Flipside operates and manages the Brisbane Circus Centre providing space and support for circus training, development, experimentation, and presentation.

Flipside is a not-for-profit company that delivers four key programs:

• Training programs right across Queensland including our circus school at the Brisbane Circus Centre;

• An artistic program of professional performances by/for and with children and young people;

• Community and social circus programs including extensive regional and remote touring programs;

• Support for Queensland’s circus artists and independent companies.

We believe circus provides a unique opportunity for young people to show off, take risks, trust, dream and aspire, work hard, and have fun.

OUR VALUES

CELEBRATION

Circus is joyous – it creates a safe space where everyone can play and laugh.

EXPERIMENTATION

Circus is risky – all that we do pushes the boundaries of the possible.

CREATIVITY

Circus is collaborative – we nurture communities (partnering with audiences, participants, and cross-agency experts) and encourage connection and creativity across society.

WELLBEING

Circus transforms people and communities – creating healthy minds and bodies, building resilience and emotional stamina.

AGILITY

Circus is nimble – with skill and agility, we are responsive to community’s needs.

HISTORY

Flipside Circus is a not-for-profit community organisation, it can trace its beginnings to a group of dedicated families and circus artists who got together to run community-based circus workshops. Our first workshops were held under a tree in a West End park in 1994.

Since then we have:

  • Trained more than 1 million participants;
  • Reached audiences of over 1.1 million; and
  • Been a catalyst for the development of Queensland’s circus sector.

For nearly 30 years Flipside has grown and developed all the while maintaining our strong commitment to delivering child-centred circus opportunities to young people regardless of their background or circumstances.

Along the way we have helped to train generations of professional circus artists, worked with world-leading trainers, and became Queensland’s largest youth arts organisation.

TESTIMONIALS

Flipside Circus a great organisation teaching gymnastic skills in a fun and nurturing way. Taking in age groups from the very young to the fully grown, physical and mental confidence is encouraged and developed using circus performance skills and acts. This approach is particularly embraced by the youngest members (pre-high school). A great community atmosphere which embraces students, instructors, other staff, parents, family and friends. Highly recommended for children seeking something physically different and less competitive then other team sports.

It’s a great place, friendly staff and lots of good people about. I attend Adult classes at night and am really enjoying the culture. I’m doing things that I’ve never done before, especially from childhood. From a fitness and core perspective some nights can be intense, but they really cater well to the abilities of the class. My flexibility is woeful but I’m making greater progress than I have in years. A fun way to exercise! They live up to the values listed on their website and I feel they’ve got a lot of integrity.
I recommend it for everybody to at least try once.

Great venue for learning how to be part of a circus!!! The trainers are very friendly and excellent at working with kids of all ages and skills. The kids start off learning basic floor skills, tumbling, cartwheels, jumping, somersaults etc. They then start to learn more advanced skills like trapeze, silk/rope acrobatics, juggling and others. Great overall experience!!
