Unthink the Impossible classes provide fun circus activities for children with disabilities and additional needs, from three to ten years of age. Working closely with occupational and physiotherapists from On Call Children’s Therapy (OCC), Flipside’s professional circus trainers teach a range of circus skills including manipulation, trapeze, tight wire, acrobatics and performance during workshops held at Flipside Circus.
The skills taught assist children to improve occupational capabilities in a range of physical and mental areas including rising to a challenge, trust, risk taking, creativity, team work and communication. It’s a real activity with all the social, emotional and physical benefits that align with therapeutic goals:
Group behavior skills
Coordination and gross motor skills
Postural control
Circus is naturally inclusive and learning circus skills can be a pathway to improving confidence. Early feedback from parents and Occupational Therapists engaged in the program is indicating exciting and extremely positive results for the children. In 2011 Flipside Circus received a grant to fund research into the benefits of circus for children with additional needs.
Families can utilise their therapy funding (e.g. Medicare, private health, government initiatives).
